Prior to departure for an IFR flight, the pilot will receive an ATC route clearance. This clearance is issued by the appropriate air traffic control unit and constitutes a detailed description of the route and levels to be flown within the terminal area in order to provide separation to other traffic and to obey noise abatement procedures and airspace restrictions. In addition, the further route according to the flight plan and permission to climb to flight plan cruising level will be included in the ATC route clearance to enable the pilot to follow communication failure procedures. ATC route clearances shall always be read back unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate ATS authority in which case they shall be acknowledged in a positive manner. JAR-FCL recommends oral practise to learn the phraseology for typical flight situations. National authorities may require a practical examination. This examination may include an ATC route clearance as described above which has to be read back by the student. Symbols and abbreviations may be used as
a shorthand method to write the clearance down. The textbook "calling Radar"
(ANNEX C) provides some information and exercises to practise this task.
For practising the symbols and abbreviations listed in this book, we offer an audio CD or an audio cassette ATC Clearances - calling Radar Exercises which contains spoken air traffic route clearances which can be written down and read back by the student. The CD or cassette contains three exercises of different stages of complexity. At the end, you will hear a live recording of an IFR flight from Berne to Zurich. For information and orders
